Difference between partial colectomy and total colectomy?


Colectomy is a surgical procedure to remove all or part of your colon. Your colon, also called your large intestine, is a long tubelike organ at the end of your digestive tract. A colectomy surgery may be done to treat and prevent diseases and conditions that affect the colon, such as:
Crohn’s disease
Colon cancer
Diverticulitis
Bowel obstruction
Total colectomy surgery involves removing the entire colon. After this is removed, the end of the small intestine is sewn to the rectum to allow for continued waste disposal of the body. Partial colectomy involves removing part of the colon and may also be called subtotal colectomy. This resections a part of the colon and sometimes relies on alternative methods of waste management for the body.
