How long will it take for me to recover from my partial colectomy operation?

During a partial colectomy, a surgeon removes the diseased portion of your colon and a small portion of surrounding healthy tissue. The surgeon may join the cut ends of the colon so that waste leaves your body normally. After the surgery, you’ll stay in the hospital for about 2 to 4 days. Medication will help ease the pain. Your nurse or doctor will explain how to care for your wound. If you have a stoma, they’ll show you how to care for it. Right after the surgery, you’ll be able to drink fluids. You may be able to eat solid foods the following day. Your surgeon might recommend eating a low-fiber diet for about a month. After 1 to 2 weeks, you may be able to get back to most of your normal routine, such as walking and working. Don’t try to lift anything over 10 pounds or do intense exercise until you get your doctor’s OK. It usually takes around 6 weeks to recover fully. DR. What is the difference between a total colectomy and a partial colectomy?

During a partial colectomy, a surgeon removes the diseased portion of your colon and a small portion of surrounding healthy tissue. The surgeon may join the cut ends of the colon so that waste leaves your body normally. Or it might be necessary to connect the colon to an opening (stoma) in the abdominal wall, where waste leaves the body and collects in a bag attached to the opening. Total colectomy involves removing the entire colon. A total colectomy will also require the creation of an ileostomy (with a stoma, where a bag is worn on the outside of the body to collect stool). What are the different types of colectomy surgery?

Colectomy is a surgical procedure to remove all or part of your colon. There are various types of colectomy operations: Total colectomy involves removing the entire colon. Partial colectomy involves removing part of the colon and may also be called subtotal colectomy. Hemicolectomy involves removing the right or left portion of the colon. Proctocolectomy involves removing both the colon and rectum. Colectomy surgery usually requires other procedures to reattach the remaining portions of your digestive system and permit waste to leave your body. DR. What is the best form of fistula treatment?

A fistulotomy is the best form of fistula treatment. A fistula occurs when two of your organs or vessels form an abnormal connection. These organs or vessels would otherwise not be connected. A fistulotomy generally involves cutting along the whole length of the fistula to open it up so it heals as a flat scar. The fistulotomy procedure uses a radiofrequency technique and has distinct advantages like a short operation time, minimal blood loss, early return to normal activity and a low recurrence rate. Which is why it is also the most common method of treatment for fistula in ano. DR. How long does it take to complete a fissure surgery?

An anal fissure (fissure-in-ano) is a small, oval shaped tear in skin that lines the opening of the anus. Fissures typically cause severe pain and bleeding with bowel movements. Fissures are quite common in the general population, but are often confused with other causes of pain and bleeding, such as hemorrhoids. Surgical options for treating anal fissure include Botulinum toxin (Botox®) injection into the anal sphincter and surgical division of a portion of the internal anal sphincter (lateral internal sphincterotomy). Both of these are performed typically as outpatient procedures. These fissure surgeries can take anywhere from 1 to 5 hours depending on the surgeon. DR. Does fissure treatment hurt?

An anal fissure is a tear in the lining of the lower rectum (anal canal) that causes pain during bowel movements. About 9 out of 10 short-term fissures heal with home treatment—including using stool softeners or fiber supplements and taking regular sitz baths. If a fissure lasts more than 8 to 12 weeks, you may need prescription medicines. These may include nitroglycerin cream, high blood pressure medicines in pill or gel form, or injections of botulinum toxin (Botox). DR. What is the time period for hemorrhoid surgery recovery?

Surgery to remove hemorrhoids is called hemorrhoidectomy. The doctor makes small cuts around the anus to slice them away. Hemorrhoidectomy is often an outpatient procedure, and you can usually go home the same day. Because it’s highly sensitive near the cuts and you might need stitches, the area can be tender and painful afterward. Hemorrhoid surgery recovery most often takes about 2 weeks, but it can take as long as 3 to 6 weeks to feel like you’re back to normal. DR. Will my hemorrhoids treatment take too long?

For some people, a healthy diet and lifestyle and over-the-counter medicines aren’t enough to serve as hemorrhoid treatment. There are also procedures that shrink or remove them, such as using a laser, that can be done in your doctor’s office. Although these may hurt less and have fewer complications, surgery might be a better long-term choice, especially if your hemorrhoids are large and very painful or bleeding. Hemorrhoid surgery is safe and effective most of the time. But you’ll still need to eat a high-fiber diet, avoid constipation, and take care of your bottom to help prevent new hemorrhoid flare-ups. Surgery to remove hemorrhoids is called hemorrhoidectomy. The doctor makes small cuts around the anus to slice them away. DR. Is hernia repair surgery safe?

A hernia occurs when fatty tissue or an organ pushes through a weak place in the surrounding connective tissue or muscle wall. Hernias usually don’t get better on their own. They tend to get bigger. In rare cases, they can lead to life-threatening complications. That’s why doctors often recommend hernia repair surgery. This type of operation is normally very safe. But like all surgeries, having your hernia removed comes with a number of possible complications. They include: Infection of the wound Blood clots: These can develop because you’re under anesthesia and don’t move for a long period of time. Pain: In most cases, the area will be sore as you heal. But some people develop chronic, long-lasting pain after surgery for a groin hernia, for example. Research shows that using mesh can reduce your risk of this happening by half. DR. Should I opt for laparoscopic cholecystectomy surgery or an open surgery?

Laparoscopic cholecystectomy surgery or gallbladder surgery is the best method of treating gallstones that cause symptoms unless there is a reason that the surgery should not be done. Gallstones can form in the common bile duct years after the gallbladder is removed, although this is rare. Recovery is much faster and less painful after laparoscopic surgery than after open surgery. The hospital stay after laparoscopic surgery is shorter than after open surgery. People generally go home the same day or the next day, compared with 2 to 4 days or longer for open surgery. The best way to be certain is to consult an experienced doctor such as Dr. Mehli Nazir who will be able to take a look at your medical history and let you know what course of action is best for you.
