Colectomy is a surgical procedure to remove all or part of your colon. Your colon, also called your large intestine, is a long tubelike organ at the end of your digestive tract.
Total colectomy surgery involves removing the entire colon. After this is removed, the end of the small intestine is sewn to the rectum to allow for continued waste disposal of the body.
Partial colectomy involves removing part of the colon and may also be called subtotal colectomy. This resections a part of the colon and sometimes relies on alternative methods of waste management for the body.
Hemicolectomy involves removing the right or left portion of the colon. Typically, the healthy sections of the colon are connected together, and an ostomy is not needed.
Proctocolectomy involves removing both the colon and rectum. The rectum is the part of the body that is at the end of the colon that is used to hold stool before it is eliminated from the body through the anus. With both the colon and the rectum removed, the body will need a new way to dispose of stool. The ileostomy may be permanent, or it may be temporary.
