What is pilonidal sinus disease?

A pilonidal sinus (PNS) is a small hole or tunnel in the skin. This hole might accumulate fluid or pus over time and result in the formation of a cyst or abscess. It generally occurs in the cleft at the top of the buttocks. It can cause severe pain and can often become infected. The pilonidal sinus disease generally occurs after puberty or in individuals who spend extended periods of time seated. Pilonidal sinus disease can be treated through surgery, lancing, phenol injection and in the early stages through general hygiene.
